About Us
Rumadu is a social-enterprise that markets and distributes forest honey from the East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. In doing so, we ensure both the local forest sustainability through environmental- friendly practices and economic empowerment of the forest honey hunters.
The Province of East Nusa Tenggara contains of 5 main islands (Flores, Sumba, Timor, Alor and Lembata), with different signature soil and climate conditions. The west areal of the Province is covered with kakao, coffee, clove and candle nut plantations while leading to the east the plantations are more resistant against the dry climate, e.g. palmyra, coconut, and cashew nut. The taste of the forest honey in each areas are contrast toward each other including the character of water content and colour itself, despite the same species of bee as the producer (Apis Dorsata). The forest bees act as pollinator that fertilizes the local commodity plantations, benefiting the local farmers. Preserving the existence of the bees is also an economically viable option to conserve the forest surrounding the hives. Save trees, save bees!
Forest honey hunting activity has been inherited between generations in the area and performed under heavy local traditional influences. It contributes as additional income for the hunters, claiming up to 25-50% of the annual income per forest honey hunters household. Thus, allowing their households to have direct access toward cash during the absence of agricultural crops harvest season.
The production of forest honey in each area can reach up to 20,000kg each year while the amount absorbed by the market only reaches less than 30% of the annual production, which is the result of lack in market access, lack in know-how of processing the products by the farmers as well as lack in product awareness by the customers. The production itself is decreasing due to the character of land shifting cultivation and usage of chemical inputs in agricultural practices by the local farmers that decrease the number of trees both for bees to hang the hive and for eating nectars and pollens.
How We Work
Taking an active role in solving the problem, Rumadu serves as the marketing and distribution channel of the SENOESA Forest Honey Production Cooperative in East Flores District. Rumadu ensures both sales and customer knowledge awareness for the Forest Honey products, while the cooperative ensures the dissemination of environmental-friendly harvesting know how and standardized post-harvest processing in order to produce forest honey with sustainable quality and quantity.
The Cooperative was initiated in 2014, where the Flores Forest Honey entered the national market for the very first time. At the moment, the cooperative actively works with forest honey hunters from 3 Districts in Flores Timur (East Flores), Sikka and Alor in providing know-how, product quality and forest sustainability knowledge, which in result the hunters are regularly supplying raw honey as members of the Cooperative. The activities provided by the cooperative include field school (trainings), centralized processing unit (post-harvest handling), harvest tools, and forest honey tourist attraction.
We aim to provide sustainable and sufficient financial incentives for forest honey farmers in preserving local forest through environmental-friendly harvesting practices.
